Brief Overview of State MMR or PAMR
The Iowa Maternal Mortality Review Committee first convened in 1952. The committee has nine members, meets and reviews all maternal deaths defined as any death occurring while a woman is pregnant or of a woman within one year after delivery. This includes but is not limited to deaths resulting from abortions, ectopic pregnancies and all deaths during pregnancy, childbirth, puerperium or deaths from complications of childbirth. In 2013, Iowa had 39,013 live births and three pregnancy-related deaths, in 2014, Iowa had 39,685 live births and 1 pregnancy related death. Our mission is to identify and review all pregnancy-associated deaths in Iowa to develop effective education or interventions to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.
